In ancienttimes, people considered intelligence as the quality of living. That is,intelligent people are more sophisticated and live a better life.
One of thefirst theories of intelligence was proposed by Charles Spearman. He theorizedthat a person's performance on intelligence tests could be traced to a consonant,a facto, General intelligence that he called G-factor, he observed that peoplewho perform well on one cognitive test tend to perform well on other tests.
He concludedthat intelligence is a general cognitive ability.
Even today, some people still believe in this theory. They think that intelligent peoplelearn anything easily, anything. They are more successful in every aspects oflife. But this is not actually true. Let me tell you a real anecdote.
I guess allof us have heard the name of Isaac Newton, one of the most intelligent peoplein history, and his gravestone, the epitaph, reads , nature and nature's lawslay hid in night. God said, let Newton be, and all was light. He is one of thegreatest geniuses of all time. He revolutionized science by formulating thelaws of motion and universal gravity. This genius became a member of parliamentfor two years and he only spoke once. It was a windy day and it seemed Newtonhad something to say. People were all ears and he just said “close the window”.How could that happen? One of the greatest geniuses of all time and justtelling someone to close the window? Spearman theory fails to explain for thiscase. We should look for a more comprehensive theory
multiple intelligences
HowardGardner proposed that traditional IQ testing does not fully and accuratelydepict a person's ability he proposes eight different intelligences based onskills and abilities verbal intelligence, visual intelligence, musicalintelligence, naturalistic intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, interpersonal intelligence, bodily kinetic intelligence, and logicalintelligence. There is also an existential intelligence which I'm going to talkabout later. Be aware that there are not just intelligences, there are alsomemories and thinking styles. For example, people possess visual memory andmusical memory as well. We can think visually and also think using our body, Iwill explain more later. It is important to note that within this theory everyperson possess all intelligences to some degree.
In the nextvideos I am going to show you how to use these intelligences to teach or learna new language.
